Convention

Sound Check Chorus sign-up

THURSDAY 30th October, evening

The technicians need singers to help them set up the sound system in advance of the contests, so competitors can have the best experience possible.

There is no stage time for choruses or quartets, so this is the only opportunity for quartet members to experience the stage, albeit in a different type of ensemble.

We invite a few* representatives from each competing chorus as well as quartet singers who wish to experience the stage, and non-competing LABBS members if needed to make up numbers, to form a "scratch chorus". This enables the technicians to do their job, and also provides competitors who are taking part to feed back to their chorus what the stage conditions are like.

* To maintain fairness and equal opportunity only a few singers from each chorus may take part. You/your Chorus MD may be contacted to determine optimum participation, if the number of volunteers from your chorus is an excessive proportion of your own chorus membership or of the scratch chorus.

The following choruses have reached the participation limit, any additional sign-ups will be deleted:

Norwich Harmony
Silver Lining

Voiceparts
Tenor section is now full and applications closed.

SIGN UP FOR THE SOUND CHECK CHORUS

Please read the below information carefully, so you know what you are signing up for and are committing to!

OBSERVERS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN THE AUDITORIUM.  Non-singers, or those not on the official sign-up list will not be allowed in to the auditorium, and if any do manage to sneak in they will be politely asked to leave. Please do not put LABBS volunteers in the position of having to enforce this.

TIMINGS

  • 7:45pm - The nominated sound check quartets and registered sound check chorus singers must gather in the level 5 bar area, to be checked in by the Events team. Only those on the list will be admitted at the appointed time. Late entry will not be permitted, so be on time!
  • 8:00pm - Sound check starts for the engineers to complete their technical setup, with scratch chorus and one nominated non-competing quartet (already chosen).
  • 8:45pm approx - E&J nominated sound check judges to assess setup and work with engineers to optimise. No other judges are allowed in the auditorium.
  • 9:30pm - Anticipated finish time - if any issues arise, the sound check may need to continue until all issues are resolved.  Please exit the convention centre building promptly once you are released.

Please do not attempt to access the backstage area at any time, and be prepared to leave the auditorium promptly and swiftly at the finish time, as the technical staff will be continuing with setup and no observers are allowed for Health and Safety reasons.

Important: please do not chat/talk once you are in the auditorium, as the techs will be working at all times and communicating across distances and need to be able to hear each other.

If on the day you are unable to take part for the whole process start to finish, please email soundcheck@labbs.org.uk to let us know, and please do not attend at all.

Please email any questions to soundcheck@labbs.org.uk.

What is needed from you:

Your voice, confident from-memory knowledge of more recent polecats*, patience and discipline on the risers (strictly no chatting, including on arrival, as this will hamper the technicians' ability to work efficiently).

* These will be the following polecats, which are all available on the members' polecats page - please do not bring sheet music on stage.

  • With a Little Help  from My Friends
  • You Gotta Be
  • Make Your Own Kind of Music
  • Anthem
Note that the only males who can sign up are:
  • MDs of competing LABBS choruses
  • Members of competing mixed quartets
You must be able and prepared to sing in the female range, and if you are a mixed quartet "MQ" LABBS member who is not also a FULL member of LABBS with a web site login, please contact soundcheck@labbs.org.uk for access to relevant polecat music.

Sadly due to licensing restrictions, we cannot accommodate other non-LABBS members of any gender who are attending convention.

What you will get in return:

Experience of the stage and acoustics, which you can report back on to your chorus (and any chorus who asks, who is unable to take part in the sound check themselves).
