Want to join an existing chorus?(Or are you a whole new chorus?) If you love singing, you've come to the right place! Please see the club pages or the map for details of your nearest chorus. Alternatively contact the LABBS Membership Secretary for guidance, or fill in this form and someone will be in touch: New ChorusesInitial contact will be made by your club with either the LABBS Membership Secretary, a member of the Executive or with another club. The timing of your application to join LABBS will depend upon your club. You may wish to apply immediately and, with some guidance from a Regional Representative, prepare yourselves for membership. However, you may wish to wait a while and then apply for membership. Application is always made to the Membership Secretary with the appropriate fee. Your Regional Representative will then be notified of the application and appropriate visits will be arranged. At the initial visit you may want the Representative to give you some details about LABBS. Advice may be necessary about setting up a committee, preparing a constitution perhaps based on the Association’s guidelines, help with music and the importance of copyright. At this stage it may be necessary to explain how the Association is run and about competitions and shows perhaps encouraging you to attend these occasions during your preparation for membership. It will also be necessary to hear you sing at least one barbershop arrangement. At least two visits may be made before membership of LABBS is approved. Your Regional Representative will need to be satisfied that your Club is structured well and that your singing meets the criteria set down by the Association. Your proposed Chorus name, as opposed to your Club name, will need to be checked by the LABBS Chorus Registrar against an existing Chorus Register to avoid any duplication. This rule also applies to any quartet name which will be checked against a Quartet Register. If the name chosen has not already been selected it will be registered for your use. You now have six songs to learn, music for each song is enclosed with teachtapes. These songs form the basis of your audition for entry into LABBS. When you have mastered them and are ready to perform them in front of an invited audience, your representative will also attend and report to LABBS on her findings. After membership has been approved and subscriptions have been paid, your club’s representative will be invited to the next Council Meeting where you will be officially welcomed into the Association. No definite timing can be given for admission into LABBS; this will obviously depend upon the club, the experience of its members, their aims and ambitions etc.
Our Annual Convention is the highlight of the Barbershop year with great shows, competitions, and afterglows, where everyone gets to sing, with friendship and laughter everywhere you go. We visit some wonderful places for Convention, Brighton, Harrogate and Cardiff being some of our venues, and, whether competing or not, Convention is not to be missed. Get cracking with these new songs so that you can join us as full members of a truly wonderful Organisation - LABBS. |
